MAME 2003-Plus
How to install & setup the old arcade game emulator
MAME 2003-Plus is not a standalone MAME release. It is a libretro arcade emulator core that runs inside a libretro frontend, most commonly RetroArch. The libretro documentation describes MAME 2003-Plus as a multi-arcade system emulator core focused on frontend integration, performance, and broad compatibility. It was forked from MAME 2003, which came from Xmame 0.78, while MAME 2003-Plus continues to receive maintenance and added game support.
Overview

This means the recommended installation path is:
enumerate label= *.
Install RetroArch for your operating system.
Install the MAME 2003-Plus core in RetroArch.
Use ROM sets that are compatible with MAME 2003-Plus.
Load arcade ROM zip files through RetroArch using the MAME 2003-Plus core.
enumerate
ROM Set Compatibility
Do not assume that ROMs for current standalone MAME are compatible with MAME 2003-Plus. The MAME 2003-Plus documentation states that the core began with MAME 0.78 game drivers, and that most MAME 0.78 ROM sets work as-is. Newer or changed games may require a MAME 2003-Plus-specific ROM set.
Keep arcade ROMs as zip files. For example:

roms/
galaga.zip
bublbobl.zip
ghouls.zip
lstlisting
Only use ROMs and BIOS files that you are legally allowed to use.
Windows Installation
Install RetroArch
enumerate label= *.
Open the official RetroArch download page:
lstlisting
https://www.retroarch.com/?page=platforms
lstlisting
Download the Windows 64-bit installer unless you specifically need a 32-bit build.
Run the installer and keep the default location unless you have a reason to change it.
Start RetroArch.

The libretro Windows guide also supports portable installs using RetroArch.7z . If using the 7z package, extract it to a user-writable folder such as:

lstlisting
Avoid extracting it into Program Files or the Windows directory.
Install MAME 2003-Plus Core

Ubuntu Linux Installation
Option A: Ubuntu Repository
For a simple installation, Ubuntu users can install RetroArch from the distribution package repositories:
lstlisting
sudo apt update
sudo apt install retroarch
lstlisting
This is simple, but the package may lag behind upstream RetroArch.
Option B: Libretro PPA
The libretro GNU/Linux guide recommends the Libretro PPA for Ubuntu-based systems when users want Libretro-maintained packages.
lstlisting
sudo apt update
sudo apt install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository --yes --no-update ppa:libretro/stable
sudo apt update
sudo apt install retroarch
lstlisting
The testing PPA is also available for users who specifically want newer test builds:
lstlisting
sudo add-apt-repository --yes --no-update ppa:libretro/testing
sudo apt update
sudo apt install retroarch
lstlisting
Install the Core on Ubuntu
If RetroArch was installed from a package manager or PPA, the libretro documentation notes that Core Downloader may be disabled and that cores may need to be installed by the package manager. Try searching for the available MAME packages:
lstlisting
apt search libretro-mame
lstlisting
If a MAME 2003-Plus package is available for your Ubuntu release, install it:
lstlisting
sudo apt install libretro-mame2003-plus
lstlisting
If no package is available, use one of these alternatives:
enumerate label= *.
Install RetroArch from Flatpak or an upstream build that includes Core Downloader, then install Arcade (MAME 2003-Plus) from Online Updater > Core Downloader .
Manually download the Linux core from the official libretro buildbot, place the shared library in RetroArch's configured cores directory, and restart RetroArch.
enumerate
Common user-writable core locations include:
lstlisting
~/.config/retroarch/cores
lstlisting
The exact directory can be checked in RetroArch under:
lstlisting
Settings > Directory > Cores
lstlisting
Load a Game on Ubuntu
enumerate label= *.
Create a ROM directory:
lstlisting
mkdir -p ~/Games/roms/mame2003-plus
lstlisting
Put compatible zip files in that directory.
In RetroArch, select Load Core > Arcade (MAME 2003-Plus) .
Select Load Content and choose the arcade zip file.

macOS Installation
Install RetroArch
The libretro macOS guide recommends downloading a RetroArch .dmg file and copying RetroArch.app into the Applications folder.
enumerate label= *.
Open the official RetroArch download page:
lstlisting
https://www.retroarch.com/?page=platforms
lstlisting
Download the macOS build.
Open the .dmg .
Drag RetroArch.app into /Applications .
Start RetroArch.
enumerate
Homebrew can also install RetroArch:
lstlisting
brew install --cask retroarch
lstlisting
Install MAME 2003-Plus Core
Use the RetroArch interface when possible:
enumerate label= *.
Open Online Updater .
Open Core Downloader .
Select Arcade (MAME 2003-Plus) .
enumerate
If manual installation is needed on an Intel Mac, download the x86 _64 macOS core from the libretro buildbot:
lstlisting
https://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/apple/osx/x86_64/latest/mame2003_plus_libretro.dylib.zip
lstlisting
Then unzip and place the file here:
lstlisting
~/Library/Application Support/RetroArch/cores/mame2003_plus_libretro.dylib
lstlisting
For Apple Silicon Macs, use the appropriate macOS ARM buildbot path if available, or use the Core Downloader from a Universal RetroArch build.
Command-Line Launch Example on macOS
lstlisting
"/Applications/RetroArch.app/Contents/MacOS/RetroArch"
-L " HOME/Library/Application Support/RetroArch/cores/mame2003_plus_libretro.dylib"
" HOME/Games/roms/mame2003-plus/galaga.zip"
lstlisting
Troubleshooting
Core Downloader Is Missing
Enable it in:
lstlisting
Settings > User Interface > Menu Item Visibility > Show Core Downloader
lstlisting
On Ubuntu PPA/package-manager builds, the Core Downloader may intentionally be disabled because cores are managed by the package manager.
A Game Does Not Launch
enumerate label= *.
Confirm that the file is a MAME 2003-Plus-compatible zip file.
Confirm that any required BIOS zip, such as neogeo.zip , is present in the ROM directory or another configured system path.
Try another known-compatible game to separate core setup problems from ROM set problems.
Avoid unpacking arcade zip files unless a specific guide says otherwise.
enumerate
Current MAME ROMs Fail
This is expected in many cases. Current standalone MAME and MAME 2003-Plus use different ROM definitions. Use MAME 2003-Plus-compatible ROM sets for this core.
